In a nocturnal attack on a police station in southeast Iran, suspected members of a group left eleven people dead and numerous more injured, state television reported on Friday.
In a gunfight, police have shot and killed multiple of the attackers.
Senior police officials and soldiers were killed and injured in the 2 a.m. attack in Rask town, around 1,400 kilometers (875 miles) southwest of Tehran, according to Ali Reza Marhemati, the deputy governor of Sistan and Baluchistan province.
He added that during a shootout, police shot and killed multiple attackers.
As part of a low-level insurgency against the government, terrorists and small groups in the primarily Sunni province have assaulted police stations in recent months.
Iran’s province of Sistan and Baluchestan is among its least developed regions. It was the scene of severe crackdowns on protesters after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Tehran resident who had been jailed for reportedly wearing an Islamic veil inappropriately, died in police detention amid widespread nationwide protests.
