An autopsy on Thursday, May 16, revealed that a US teenager died of cardiac arrest after participating in a social media challenge that challenged people to eat a single extremely hot tortilla chip.
The “One Chip Challenge” claimed the life of Massachusetts 14-year-old Harris Wolobah, who passed away in September of last year. One Paqui chip, seasoned with the world’s hottest peppers, the Carolina Reaper and Naga Viper, was the object of the challenge.
Over the years, the dare has taken many forms, with the peppers being a constant.
The local chief medical examiner determined that Harris died of cardiac arrest after ingesting a food with a large amount of a chili pepper extract called capsaicin, said the autopsy report, seen by AFP.
The teenager’s enlarged heart may have played a role in his demise, the autopsy also revealed.
Paqui took the product down from store shelves a few days after his passing. It was packaged in a coffin-shaped box with a red skull and the label “extreme heat.”
According to media reports, the dare resulted in the hospitalisation of three young people in California and the illness of seven others in Minnesota.
