UAE: A New Alliance to Support Farmers in Addressing Climate Change

In the UAE, a new collaboration between prominent organizations seeks to improve sustainable agriculture through the implementation of extensive vegetable seed trials, farmer capacity-building initiatives, and the mitigation of climate change.

Leading agri-tech business Silal, a division of ADQ with its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and Bayer, a pioneer in the life sciences globally, have partnered to improve the nation’s agricultural environment.

Together, the two organizations will test over thirty different vegetable seed varieties, such as tomato, cucumber, and melon, to see how they do in the harsh desert environment.

Hugo Hagen, a senior Bayer Middle East representative, told the News Times that “The naturally harsh weather conditions in the Middle East make the UAE the perfect platform to assess crop performance and help dictate agricultural practices in countries facing the brunt of climate change.”

He pointed out that the harsh desert environment will put seed survival and resistance to the test.
