The “Shahama for Sustainability” rubbish collection championship was held in Park 9 in Yas Bay Waterfront by the Abu Dhabi City Municipality in partnership with the Shahama Municipality Center as part of the “My City is More Beautiful” campaign.
The purpose of this event was to motivate partners and people in the community to maintain the cleanliness of the environment, protect public health, preserve the city’s attractiveness, and achieve sustainability standards.
The competition involved many facets of society and was organized in collaboration with organizations like the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters and the Environment Friends Society, among others.
The competitors, divided into groups like individuals, families, entities, and people of determination, fought to gather recyclable trash from streets and neighborhoods. Teams of two to five people were given an hour to collect rubbish, sort it into categories, and weigh it based on predetermined point values. Interestingly, those who collected cigarette butts received the most significant marks, highlighting the need to focus on particular recyclables, such as plastics.
