Just hours before attacks broke out in Ukraine on New Year’s Day of 2024, President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged to exact “wrath” on Russian forces.
Strikes in Russia and Ukraine have increased recently; on Saturday, there was an unprecedented attack on the Russian city of Belgorod, which resulted in the deaths of 24 people.
One day prior, in one of the largest aerial assaults since the start of the conflict, Moscow had attacked Ukrainian cities with a volley of missiles and drones, killing 39 people.
According to local officials, January 1 is a day of sorrow in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where 19 people have died.
The Russian-installed leader of the seized Donetsk region announced just after midnight on New Year’s Day that there had been “massive shelling” on the territory’s major city, resulting in four fatalities and thirteen injuries.
Governor Oleg Kiper reported that three people were injured and one person killed as a result of a Russian drone strike in the southern Odesa area of Ukraine.
Additionally, according to governor Maksym Kozytskyi, Russian drones were shot down early on Monday by air defense systems in the Lviv region of western Ukraine.
Zelensky showed off footage of Ukrainian fighter jets and artillery during his televised New Year’s speech.
“Next year, the enemy will feel the wrath of domestic production,” Zelensky stated.
