China’s magnitude 6.2 earthquake claims 118 lives.

China's magnitude 6.2 earthquake claims 118 lives.

Few minutes before midnight on Monday, a magnitude-6.2 earthquake rocked a remote and hilly county on the northern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, killing at least 118 and injuring hundreds more, according to Chinese state media.

Although a variety of emergency responses have been mobilized by the authorities, the extremely low temperatures may make rescue operations difficult. A cold wave that began last week is still sweeping across most of China, leaving most areas in subfreezing temperatures.

According to state media, after hours of rescue and relief activities that started before daylight, twenty persons have been reported missing in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Western provinces like Gansu, which are located on the eastern edge of the tectonically active Qinghai-Tibetan plateau, frequently experience earthquakes. 2008’s magnitude-8.0 earthquake in Sichuan, China, was the deadliest earthquake to strike the country in recent memory, killing around 70,000 people. The most recent earthquake’s epicentre was five kilometers from Gansu’s border with a neighboring province. Numerous locations in Qinghai province experienced strong earthquakes, according to the official Xinhua news agency.

The China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reports that the earthquake struck Jishishan county in the northwest province of Gansu, China, on Monday at 11:59 p.m. local time (1559 GMT), at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles).
