Sheikh Hamdan tests self-driving taxi ahead of its launch in Dubai

KhaleejTimes

The Honorable In advance of its debut in Dubai, the self-driving taxi was tested by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai.

Using five Chevy Bolt-based autonomous vehicles in Jumeirah 1, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Cruise, a self-driving technology company, began data collection and testing of their technology in October for Dubai’s traffic signals, signage, and drivers’ behavior, among other attributes.

An important step toward the introduction of autonomous ride-hailing services in Dubai is being taken with this project.

This action is a component of the RTA’s plan to support Dubai’s position as the world leader in autonomous vehicles and further the emirate’s goal of becoming the smartest city in the world. This kind of endeavor, which calls for investments in smart mobility and the use of cutting-edge technologies, is consistent with the RTA’s mission to improve the safety and well-being of its inhabitants, residents, and guests.

Together, RTA and Cruise will operate the city’s first driverless taxi service. The RTA plans to roll out 4,000 self-driving cars by 2030, making Dubai the first non-US city to offer Cruise autonomous vehicles for sale.

The introduction of autonomous vehicles will reduce traffic jams, the frequency of collisions, and cut harmful emissions.
