Erdogan of Turkey embarks on a "new chapter" bid by visiting NATO partner Athens.

ATHENS: Following years of hostility, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey is scheduled to visit Athens on Thursday. This visit is expected to be closely monitored as it marks an attempt to start a “new chapter” between NATO members and historical adversaries.

Meets with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the ferocious Turkish leader is anticipated to talk about trade, regional matters, and the ever-tough problem of migration.

The day before his five-hour visit on Thursday, Erdogan stated he was looking for a “new chapter” in relations based on “win-win” principles in an interview with the Greek daily Kathimerini.

Since a 2016 agreement with the European Union, which Mitsotakis and other EU leaders intend to revise, Ankara has acted as a bulwark on migration.
Along with Erdogan, a retinue of diplomats are bringing up the long-standing matter of Greek-Turkish territorial disputes in the Aegean Sea with their Greek counterparts.

Aegean sovereignty has been called into doubt by Erdogan, and Turkish and Greek jets frequently stage fictitious dogfights in disputed airspace.

The finding of hydrocarbons in the eastern Mediterranean has further strained relations; in 2019, Ankara infuriated Athens by concluding a contentious maritime zone agreement with Libya.
