A Patchwork Return to Normal Skies

Travellers booking flights to and from the UAE this week are navigating a mixed picture, as international airlines take varying approaches to resuming services following a period of heightened regional security concerns. While the UAE’s own aviation authority has confirmed that air traffic across the country has fully resumed, individual carriers continue to make their own calls on when, and whether, to bring back specific routes.

The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) said its decision to restore normal operations followed a thorough assessment of operational and security conditions, carried out in close coordination with relevant authorities. The regulator added that real-time monitoring of the airspace situation remains firmly in place, a signal that officials are treating the return to normalcy as an ongoing process rather than a one-time announcement.

Airlines Take Divergent Paths

Despite the UAE’s own confirmation that its airspace is fully operational, airlines are making independent decisions based on the specific routes they fly and their own risk assessments, decisions that don’t always align neatly with the regulator’s timeline.

Turkish Airlines has resumed its services to both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, though the carrier has cautioned that further cancellations remain possible as it continues to monitor the broader regional airspace picture. Flights to Iran, notably, remain suspended for the airline. Air France has similarly resumed flights to and from Dubai, alongside Riyadh, though its Beirut services stay grounded until at least September 13.

Qatar Airways, meanwhile, is now operating multiple daily flights to Dubai and has resumed services to Bahrain, Kuwait, and Erbil, even as the airline continues to warn passengers that delays remain a possibility. The carrier says its overall network has recovered to more than 160 destinations, representing roughly 85 percent of its pre-conflict route map, a notable milestone in its broader recovery.

Among the most encouraging signs for UAE-India travel links, Air India and its low-cost arm Air India Express have restored their full GCC network, including every destination they served before regional tensions disrupted schedules. Together, the two carriers now operate around 780 weekly flights connecting India and the Gulf region, underscoring just how significant this travel corridor remains for both countries.

Not every airline has followed suit, however. Pegasus continues to keep its services to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah suspended, alongside several other Middle East destinations, while Virgin Atlantic has confirmed that its London-Dubai route will remain suspended for the foreseeable future, offering no clear timeline for when it might resume.

A Cautious European Advisory Still Looms

One factor complicating the picture for several international carriers is a conflict-zone advisory issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which has recommended that airlines avoid the airspace of the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar until September 30. While such advisories are not legally binding mandates, many European carriers factor them heavily into their own operational risk assessments, contributing to the extended suspensions seen among some European airlines even as UAE authorities themselves have declared the airspace fully open.

This divergence between regulator confidence and individual airline caution isn’t unusual following periods of regional tension, but it does mean travellers need to check directly with their specific carrier rather than assuming a blanket return to pre-disruption schedules across the board.

What It Means for Travellers

For passengers planning trips through Dubai or Abu Dhabi in the coming weeks, the practical takeaway is one of continued vigilance. While the UAE’s two major hub airports remain fully operational and are receiving an increasing number of international flights, the exact list of active routes continues to shift as individual airlines update their own schedules. Travel industry observers recommend that passengers confirm their specific flight status directly through the airline before heading to the airport, particularly for routes involving carriers that have signalled potential for further adjustments.

For the UAE’s broader tourism and business travel sectors, the gradual normalisation of international flight schedules is a welcome development, restoring connectivity that supports everything from inbound tourism to the country’s role as a global logistics and business hub.

Looking Ahead

With the EASA advisory set to run through the end of September, the coming weeks are likely to bring further incremental changes as airlines reassess their positions. UAE aviation officials, having already confirmed a full domestic resumption, will be watching closely to see how quickly the remaining holdout carriers follow the lead of those that have already returned, restoring Dubai and Abu Dhabi to their full pre-disruption connectivity.
