Etihad Rail Passenger Service Set to Transform UAE Travel in 2026

The UAE’s landmark Etihad Rail project is on track to launch its first-ever passenger services in 2026, ushering in a new era of inter-emirate travel. This ambitious national railway will initially connect Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Fujairah, offering a fast, comfortable, and sustainable alternative to road travel and marking a major milestone in the country’s infrastructure development.

Launch Timeline and Initial Routes

Confirmed to begin operations in 2026, the inaugural passenger service will run on a core spine linking the UAE’s key cities. The decision to prioritize the Abu Dhabi-Dubai-Fujairah corridor addresses high commuter demand and enhances access to the eastern coast. This launch forms the foundation of a network designed to eventually carry millions of passengers annually across all seven emirates.

Revolutionary Travel Times and Comfort

Etihad Rail trains will operate at speeds of up to 200 km/h, drastically reducing journey times:

  • Abu Dhabi to Dubai: Approximately 57 minutes

  • Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: Roughly 105 minutes
Each train will accommodate up to 400 passengers and feature modern amenities, including comfortable seating, onboard connectivity, and workspaces, redefining the standard for long-distance travel in the UAE.

Strategically Located Stations

The initial phase will feature three main stations, chosen for their strategic demographic and connectivity value:

  1. Mohammed bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi

  2. Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai

  3. Sakamkam area near Fujairah’s Al Hilal City
Plans include a total of 11 passenger stations across the network, with future stops in Sharjah, Al Dhannah, and Madinat Zayed, ensuring comprehensive national coverage.

Seamless Multi-Modal Integration
A cornerstone of the project is seamless connectivity. Etihad Rail will integrate with existing and future metro, bus, taxi, and ride-hailing services. This “first and last-mile” strategy ensures passengers can easily access stations, promoting a unified and efficient national transport ecosystem.

Building on a Freight Foundation

The passenger service is built upon Etihad Rail’s established national freight network, inaugurated in 2023, which stretches from Ghuwaifat on the western border to Fujairah on the east coast. This dual-use infrastructure represents a significant engineering achievement, laying the groundwork for sustainable mobility for generations to come. Future plans also include a dedicated high-speed line between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, promising a travel time of just 30 minutes.

A Catalyst for National Growth

The launch of Etihad Rail’s passenger service is more than a transportation project; it is a national catalyst. By providing a reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly alternative to cars, it will reduce highway congestion, lower carbon emissions, and unlock new patterns for living, working, and tourism. This network promises to enhance economic connectivity and solidify the UAE’s position as a leader in innovative infrastructure, paving the way for a more connected and sustainable future.
