Following a turbulent evening in three British cities resulting in numerous arrests, Prime Minister Keir Starmer called an urgent meeting of police chiefs on Thursday. Following the mass stabbing in a seaside town on Monday that resulted in the deaths of three young girls, far-right groups have organised protests that have seen cars set on fire and large crowds outside Starmer’s official residence.
Mr. Starmer “will convene senior policing leaders in Downing Street today to offer them the government’s full backing following multiple high-profile incidents of extreme violence and public disorder on our streets”, according to an official statement.
Over a hundred people were arrested in London on Wednesday night as part of a far-right protest against the government’s response to Monday’s stabbing in Southport. The demonstrations also shook the northern cities of Hartlepool and Manchester.
According to London’s Metropolitan police, over 100 people have been arrested for crimes including violent disorder, assault on an emergency worker, and violating protest laws. A few officers also reported minor injuries. Protesters outside of Starmer’s 10 Downing Street home witnessed altercations, bottles being thrown at the police, and cries of shame on you” as tensions rose.
