In a pivotal election, Iranian expatriates residing in the United Arab Emirates voted to select the person to succeed outgoing President Ebrahim Raisi, who passed away in a helicopter accident in May. The Iranian missions report that on Friday, a “good turnout” of foreigners exercised their rights and shaped the destiny of their nation. “It is important to vote. We are witnessing this election at a pivotal moment. We look forward to stability and advancement,” an expat going by the name Saleh said.
When presenting their passport or national identity card, Iranian expatriates who were 18 years of age or older could cast their ballots at the Iranian Consulate General in Dubai as well as the Iranian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. To make voting easier, special counters and desks were arranged. Voters in Iran placed their ballots inside a sealed box.
The early presidential elections were held in roughly 95 other countries, including the United Arab Emirates, where Iranian nationals were living, according to Iranian Ambassador Reza Ameri.
“There are roughly 500,000 Iranians in the United Arab Emirates, with Dubai housing the majority of them,” Ameri stated. About 60,000 polling places were set up outside of Iran, while there were two centres in the United Arab Emirates. The ambassador clarified that although paper ballots are still used for most voting outside of Iran, some places have switched to electronic voting.
