In the North Caucasus of Russia, Gunmen Open Fire on Targets, Leaving at Least six Dead.

In Dagestan, in the North Caucasus region of Russia, gunmen opened fire on Sunday at a synagogue, an Orthodox church, and a police post, leaving six police officers dead and twelve injured, according to the interior ministry, which was cited by the local Russian news agencies.

Nine people have died in the primarily Muslim area, according to a local religious organization, including seven police officers.

According to the Interior Ministry, which Russian news agencies cited, four gunmen were shot and killed during the events. Another person was slain in a shootout at a church in Makhachkala, the primary administrative hub of the area, according to a local official. There were also reports of an Orthodox priest being killed.

The insurgency that spilled over from neighboring Chechnya hit restive Dagestan in the 2000s, and Russian security forces responded forcefully to combat extremists in the area. According to the agencies, the Caspian Sea region of Makhachkala, which has a lengthy coastline, was the scene of gunfire exchanges.

About 125 kilometers (75 miles) to the south, in Derbent, police were reportedly getting ready to raid a building where gunmen were holed up, according to an unofficial channel on the Telegram messaging app, Mash. In Derbent, which is home to a historic Jewish community and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the gunmen attacked a church and a synagogue.
