Sanju Samson, the captain, scored 86 runs on Tuesday, but it was in vain as the Delhi Capitals defeated the Rajasthan Royals by 20 runs to advance to the IPL playoffs. Kuldeep Yadav, a spinner for Delhi, delivered vital blows when the game was close. Abishek Porel’s attacking 65 and Jake Fraser-McGurk’s 20-ball fifty helped Delhi to a 221-8 score at their home Feroz Shah Kotla ground.
Samson’s fifth half-century of the season gave Rajasthan hope in their chase, but his removal—a catch in the deep that the third umpire ruled clean—turned the tide of the match in Delhi’s favour.
In the following two overs, Rajasthan, who has not yet secured a playoff berth, lost three more wickets, and Delhi, who had won six of their previous twelve games, held the opposition to 201-8.
After the defeat, Samson remarked, “We had it in our hands; it was 10–11 runs per over, which was achievable, but these things happen in the IPL.”
We have lost three games this season, but they have all been close. We’ve been playing excellent cricket the entire time. The tournament’s outcome is unpredictable, so we must continue refining and returning because we cannot sit back.
First-time winners Rajasthan, who finished second behind Kolkata Knight Riders at the top, has eight victories in eleven games and is still the favorite to make the top two in the playoffs.
