Dubai: Some Households still lack Access to Electricity and Water Nearly a Week After the Floods

Following unprecedented rainfall and last week’s flooding, several structures and communities in Dubai are still dealing with the repercussions. The severe downpours disrupted daily life, and many residents were without utilities, water, and electricity for almost a week. As a result, they have been looking for alternate options.

Flooding has impacted a few residential buildings at The Greens in Dubai. Some apartment tenants have been living without water or electricity since Tuesday, April 16. Rupa Sarkar, an Indian resident of The Greens, stated that the officials had been attempting to remove the water from the basement for over five days. “In our building, they had to cut off electricity because the entire basement was filled with water,” she stated.

The restoration of electricity is still ongoing, though. The neighbourhood has rallied around Rupa and her neighbors, with local acquaintances donating food in the early going. A few days later, the building administration made hotel reservations for tenants while the electricity was fixed. Monday night, we checked out of the hotel. Although the building management has set up generators as a temporary fix, we are unsure if power has returned yet.”

Veera Akula, an Indian expat living in Discovery Gardens, was also impacted by the power loss and experienced severe hardships. The building lost electricity on Tuesday at precisely 3 p.m. due to water seeping into the transformers and breaking some wires. It hasn’t been restored since then.
