Driving for Twelve Hours: UAE Citizens find it Difficult to return Home in the Pouring Rain

The UAE experienced its worst downpour on record on April 16, which made things difficult for those who had chosen to go outside for work.

Many of them struggled to figure out how to go home. Some had to walk for hours as the trip back took 12 hours. However, many others had to wait until the following day to get home.

Indian expat Prasin Dave was one of the locals who drove for more than twelve hours. Flooding and heavy traffic caused him to deviate from his regular path from his home in Al Qusais to his office in Al Jaddaf. His daily 30-minute commute revealed a 50-minute delay, which prompted worries about potential flooding.

Due to the flooded roads, he experienced heavy traffic when he changed his normal routes and headed towards Deira. “People started getting out of their cars to investigate the cause of the congestion,” he clarified. Ultimately, they worked together to clear a route through the center of the gridlock so that bigger cars could try to get through.

Despite the severe rain and darkness, Prasin searched for a motel, only to discover that all were already occupied. When he got back in his automobile, he drove through flooded places, damaging his vehicle. When he parked on the side, he saw several cars floating in the sea.
