The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) reports that the UAE’s civil aviation industry saw phenomenal growth in the first quarter of 2024, handling an astounding 36.5 million passengers.
This figure illustrates the sector’s impressive growth trajectory and represents a 14.7% increase over the same period last year.
10,723,639 arrivals, 10,874,232 departures, and 14,944,466 transit passengers are included in the breakdown.
The air cargo industry handled 1.1 million tonnes of cargo in Q1 2024, a notable 32% increase over the same period the previous year. This volume comprised 714,446 tonnes of transit goods, 119,490 tonnes of exports, and 269,526 tonnes of imports. During this time, national carriers accounted for roughly 68% of all air cargo movements.
This success, according to GCAA Director-General Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, is the result of the Authority’s and its partners’ cooperative efforts at the local and federal government levels.
Al Suwaidi emphasised that these growth rates demonstrate the industry’s resilience, competitiveness, and prospects for future development.
The policy of open skies has been greatly aided by the deliberate opening of new markets for domestic carriers, which has been made possible by 189 air transport agreements with nations across the globe.
