200 nations at COP28 adopt landmark 'UAE Consensus' to move away from fossil fuels

GulfToday

At a summit in Dubai on Wednesday, over 200 countries adopted the first-ever global demand to move away from fossil fuels, which are the main cause of climate change and the root of the world’s current dilemma.

Within minutes of the meeting beginning on Wednesday, Sultan Al Jaber announced the ratification of the key document—the global stocktake, which outlines the world’s current state of climate dereliction and its intended course of recovery—after 13 days of negotiations and one more restless night. Standing, the delegates gave each other hugs.

The final plenary is scheduled for later today, according to the COP28 Presidency, who also announced that a revised draft final agreement was made available on the UNFCCC website on Wednesday morning. There are 196 articles total in the draft final agreement text, spread across 21 pages.

According to COP28 president Sultan Al Jaber, “you did step up, you showed flexibility, you put common interest ahead of self-interest.”

He declared that the United Arab Emirates was “rightly proud” of its contribution to “transformational change” on Earth.
